History
The Gray Branch of the Detroit Public Library was opened in its present location on May 1, 1975. It is named for a former member of the Library Commission, John F. Gray. The Library provides materials for all age groups including books, magazines, newspapers and a variety of audio materials from books on tape to songs and stories for children. A special feature of the Gray Branch is the Charles H. Lewis Recreational Activities Collection, which comprises both a general history and an overall philosophy of leisure activities in the United States.

Gray Branch has computers for public use, which provide both word processing and access to the Internet, please phone first to check on availability. Additional services include bus schedules, seasonal tax forms, student financial aid packets, a photocopier, and secured free public parking. A public not-for-profit meeting room is available by appointment only. In addition to the regularly scheduled adult and children's programming offered by the library, many groups also utilize the library for book clubs, language classes and tutoring. The Literacy Volunteers of America*, has been tutoring students at Gray for many years.
Gray Branch, with a total book collection of 40,662 titles, serves a community population of 45,000 residents on Detroit's near east side within the City's Empowerment Zone.
